Livestock’s play a crucial role in the livelihoods of small and marginal households in the State. Animals are an essential asset to the rural poor, both those directly engaged in agricultural production and poor non-farm rural households who rely on local production for affordable nutrition.
This sector is considered as an indispensable part for wholesome development and growth of the rural economy by generating income and employment. This sector also produces animal-based products including food items, which provide much required nutrition to the human beings as well as non-food items for various utilities.
In order to make a significant contribution to the welfare of local people and the generation of livelihoods, the Department is constantly working towards its key objectives such as: improving animal health and welfare; fighting epidemics and zoonoses in livestock; ensuring sustainability of livestock rearing; eliminating poverty through income generation and self-employment generation; acknowledging food and nutritional security. Besides, the Department has also initiated various steps towards welfare of animals and birds and mitigating cruelty against them.
